CHAPTER 4

The morning of the interview arrived crisp and clear, sunlight cutting thin and pale through the curtains, but none of it reached the storm brewing inside Y/N. She'd woken up an hour before her alarm, lying still in the dark, running through possible questions in her head until the ceiling blurred and her thoughts stopped making sense. Her anxiety had taken the lead the moment her eyes opened, coiling tight in her chest, but she was determined-stubbornly, quietly determined-not to let it win. Not today.

She stood in front of the mirror longer than usual, smoothing down her blazer for the third time, adjusting a collar that didn't actually need adjusting. *Calm. Confident.* She repeated it under her breath like a spell that might actually work if she said it enough times.

By the time she reached the towering glass front of Kim Corporation, her hands had already begun to tremble, faint but unmistakable. The lobby swallowed her whole the moment she stepped inside-marble floors stretching wide and gleaming, ceilings so high they made her feel like a speck of dust drifting through something far too grand for her. She checked in at the front desk, her voice barely steady, and was directed toward the waiting area with a polite nod.

She sank into one of the chairs, back straight, hands folded tightly in her lap. The waiting room was quiet in a way that pressed against her ears-no music, no chatter, just the occasional rustle of paper somewhere down the hall and the muffled hum of conversation bleeding faintly through closed doors. She tapped her foot against the floor in a soft, uneven rhythm, a habit she'd never quite managed to break. Each tap felt like a countdown. Each tap reminded her how much was riding on the next twenty minutes.

She glanced at the clock. Then at her hands. Then at the clock again.

"Miss Y/N, you're up next. Please follow me."

Her heart lurched at the sound of her name. She rose too quickly, nearly knocking her bag off the chair, catching it just in time and pressing it against her side like a shield. She followed the receptionist down a stretch of corridor that seemed to narrow with every step, the polished walls closing in around her, her own reflection flickering past in the glass panels lining the hallway. *Breathe. Just breathe.* She counted her steps instead, anything to keep her mind from spiraling.

The receptionist stopped at a door near the end of the hall and knocked twice, gentle but sure, before pushing it open.

Inside, a man sat behind a sleek wooden desk-not the one from the lobby, she registered with a small flicker of relief, but someone else entirely. His expression was composed, professional, but not unkind. He looked up as she stepped through the doorway, offering her a polite, easy smile that did more to steady her nerves than she expected.

"Miss Y/N, please come in and have a seat."

She nodded, lowering herself into the chair across from him, willing her racing pulse to slow. His gaze was calm, unhurried, and something about the quiet steadiness of it eased the knot in her chest, if only slightly. The office was warm despite its formality-soft lighting, a few potted plants tucked into the corners, framed certificates lining one wall in careful, symmetrical rows.

"Good morning," he began, his voice smooth, carrying the kind of natural confidence she desperately wished she had. "Thank you for coming in today. How are you feeling?"

She managed a small, nervous smile, her fingers curling slightly against her knees. "Good morning. I'm a bit nervous, but I'm ready."

Something flickered in his eyes-amusement, maybe, or quiet approval. "That's perfectly normal." He opened a folder in front of him, glancing briefly at whatever was written there before looking back up at her. "Let's dive right in. Can you tell me a little about yourself, and why you're interested in this position?"

She took a slow breath, the kind she'd practiced in front of the mirror that morning, and let her thoughts settle before she spoke. "Certainly. I've been working in various administrative roles for the past few years, and I've always enjoyed organizing and managing tasks-making sure things run smoothly, even when they're chaotic behind the scenes. When I saw the opening for a Personal Assistant here at Kim Corporation, I was excited about the chance to bring what I know to a company with such a strong reputation."

He nodded slowly, pen moving across his notepad. "That's great to hear. Can you describe a challenging situation you've faced in a previous job, and how you handled it?"

Her mind scrambled briefly, flipping back through memories, searching for the right one. She caught herself before her voice could waver too badly. "In my last position, we had a major event coming up, and a week before, the main speaker cancelled." She paused, steadying her breathing before continuing. "I had to quickly find a replacement, coordinate with them on short notice, and make sure all the marketing materials were updated in time. It was stressful, genuinely stressful, but I managed to pull everything together by staying organized and keeping communication clear with the whole team."

He raised an eyebrow, something like quiet approval crossing his face. "Sounds like you handled that well. We often deal with tight deadlines and unexpected challenges here too. What do you think are the most important qualities for someone in this role?"

She considered the question carefully, choosing her words with more confidence this time. "I think being organized, adaptable, and having strong communication skills are essential. A Personal Assistant needs to juggle multiple things at once, adjust when priorities shift without warning, and communicate clearly with different departments and people who all want different things at the same time."

He nodded again, jotting something down. "Excellent points. Is there anything else you'd like to share-about yourself, your experience, anything you think would make you a good fit here?"

She hesitated only a moment before answering, her voice softer but sincere. "I'm a quick learner, and I'm always willing to go the extra mile to make sure things are done properly. I care about supporting the people I work with, and I want to contribute to something bigger than just my own tasks."

He leaned back slightly in his chair, studying her with a thoughtful expression, the kind that made her wonder-just for a second-what he was actually thinking. "Thank you, Miss Y/N. That's all the questions I have for now. Do you have any questions for me, about the role or the company?"

She shook her head, some of the earlier tension finally beginning to loosen in her shoulders. "No, I think you've covered everything. Thank you for this opportunity."

He rose from his chair and extended his hand across the desk. "Thank you for coming in. We'll be in touch soon about the next steps."

She shook his hand, her grip steadier now than it had been an hour ago, and allowed herself the smallest exhale of relief. As she stepped back out into the corridor, the walls no longer felt quite as suffocating. The interview was over. Whatever came next was out of her hands now.

Still, as she made her way back through the maze of hallways toward the lobby, the wait for an answer already felt like it might stretch on forever.
